Why is "copyediting" one word and "copy editor" two?

If you see this as one of life's grand mysteries, congratulations: You're a grammar geek.

Just like me.

I began copyediting way back when disks were floppy and a monitor weighed more than a cinder block. To this day, I continue to edit copy for clients. I'm a stickler for details.

By the way, did you catch the error in Uncle Walt's famous quote? **

Copyediting isn't a scintillating subject. Nobody has ever been named 'copy editor to the stars.'

But all writers – the good, the bad and the downright semiliterate – need a second set of eyeballs.

That's where I come in.

Before Larry copyedited one of my hit songs, I'd titled it "Nobody Does It Gooder." What was I thinking?

** This is a run-on sentence. The fix: change the comma to a period, and capitalize "it's."
